The project
¡Sombra!
The City of Phoenix has been a committed partner in bringing ¡Sombra! to life, activating nine sites across the city to explore community solutions to extreme urban heat. The project culminated in a festival celebration at Indian Steele Park on September 20, where residents engaged with installations, shade concepts, and creative heat-mitigation ideas. Initially we experienced hurdles during branding and web development relating to the city's internal review process and clarity of expectations, but we realigned and were collectively able to meet the needs of different audiences and site conditions across Phoenix.
Wayfinding played a central role in the rollout, with updated signage, sidewalk clings, and community-board posters installed across the city to support participation and increase visibility. Phoenix expanded the brand across day-to-day touchpoints, making it present and recognizable within neighborhoods and public spaces.
